Valentine for a Techie

     Well, I surface again <.< Today's card is a valentine for my son. The sentiment was cut from Cricut's Martha Stewart Seasonal Cake Art Cartridge. I learned it's best to size for your width with this cart, because otherwise it goes very wide thinking you're making a cake (I was using the Gypsy, so I could see the size ahead of time), but when you select the size to cut the shadow, be sure to select relative, but use the height number of your cut to get the shadow to match your tip cut. The software is use to expecting things sized to height, so that's the way it computes the relative size. The pattern paper is Paper Studio. I actually made a mistake her and the sentiment and it's shadow are suppose to be reversed. They are suppose to mimic the colors and style of my son's computer as you will see on the inside.

     The SVG on the inside is cut using Sure Cuts A Lot a a file from Designs On Cloud 9 called Tech Toys. The set also includes game controllers and an iPod. You can find the file here and check out some of there other cute files. They also have a free file each week!!! The papers are Bazzill from Archiver's. The sentiment on the computer screen is also welded and cut using Sure Cuts A Lot2 and the font  is Orbitron. If you'd like the cut file,  just let me know. The pattern paper is from Generation Tech by DCWV.

The matted sentiment on the bottom is printed digitally using the same font. I used stickles to re-create the look of his speakers and a white gel pen to  mark the keys on the keyboard that spell, Valentine. We'll see if he gets that code ;- )

     I also added a tab similar to a pop-up card, so that it allows the card to open and close properly and so that my son could set it on his desk in the open position and admire his computer look-alike, without the bottom of the computer flopping loose.

     Well, I also forgot to distress the white a bit, in my rush to get his package of goodies off to him at college. Birthday Wish for a Guy

     This is one of those cards, that looked better in my head, then it did when I was done >.< Probably, because in my head, I haven't chosen the papers, just the idea. Both the card base and the sentiment were cut from Cricut's Birthday Bash cartridge.  I embossed the background with Cuttlebug's Christmas Stars and used My Mind's Eye twine. I popped up the DP, which is from Paper Studio and popped up the sentiment on it. The DP is edged with a gold paint pen. This card is for my son's best friend in middle school, who is at a different college than my son. He has a great (though sometimes quirky) sense of humor and wouldn't be demanding of the looks of the card, fortunately ;- )

     No time for second guessing the front, so moving on.  The font in the multiple choice section and the Happy Birthday is Bevan (all can be found on the internet, try a google search), the one in the parenthesis is Beetle and the one in the salutation is Black Jack. The boxes and the check mark were made in Print Shop. Matt will enjoy the humor.

     I didn't get much done on the next card. First I found out I couldn't get it into the mail tomorrow anyway, because of Veterans' Day (there is no mail.) Then I needed to shop for baking ingredients, because a friend and I are doing MAJOR cookie baking all day Saturday for my Christmas Party and just for the holidays for her. It took longer than I would have thought, as DH and I stopped to eat and I looked for some wire for the next card too. Some of these cookies will probably even find there way into a shipment to the college students. So, I'll need to really move it on that next card and make up some of the doughs that need to chill overnight.

Birthday Fun

     Well, I promised I'd post the card today and I will, but first let me explain, ha, got your attention now don't I. Before using this caption, I did get my husbands permission, since it's for a friend of ours, whom he works with. Also, I did not invent this caption, it's on the Sweet Treats cart from Provo craft, I just removed the candle, but it is valid for this image as well. Now you are really interested, if you haven't peeked already ;- ) (My son thought it was objectionable though, again Provo Craft made it up, not me.)

     The image, called favor is from the Sweet Treats cart also and I made it into a shaped card (actually the blackout of the image)  in Design Studio, changing both the length and width. It will fit in a business size envelope. I layered it with the main image and embossed the horn part with Swiss Dots. I used AC Metallic Cardstock and K andCompany Confetti Designer Mat Stack for the layers. I cut the sentiment from some scrap cardstock then I doodled on it with gel pens and a sharpie and inked it with Distress Inks. I attached it with pop dots.

     The inside sentiment was done digitally and the fonts are LDJ Birthday Bash from Lettering Delights (find them on my side bar - great fonts, dings, SVG's, graphics and cut-outs) and NewWGL4Font. Now there are a number of fonts with this name and I'm not sure where I got mine, but if you go to dingbats.font-cat.com here, you can find a number of them including this one and get them free. I had to fussy cut the papers and I added some metallic confetti that I had from Stampendous Class a Peel "Grad you Did It" graduation stickers.

The Big Three-0 and window box visitors.

     Well, as promised today's card is for my friend's son's thirtieth birthday, though I still don't see how that is possible, since we were babies 30 years ago. He must be adopted ;- ) Anyway, I embossed and sanded the Core'dinations cardstock using  the Cuttlebug embossing folder. I cut out the "30" from AC metallic cardstock, using the  Cricut Plantin Schoolbook Cart and the Gypsy, so that I could size the width and height separately and popped it up on the card. The sentiment is from Clear Stamps and is embossed with sterling silver embossing powder. I really got creative to make the label. I used the gypsy to resize what was suppose to be the mat from the "Families are Forever" card on the Cricut Just Because Cards cart. It would be button 34, the one with the tree swing in the handbook. I turned off the keep proportions lock and changed the proportions to .6 inches wide by 2.5 inches long. I added a brad and popped it up. The edges are inked with Ranger Distress Fired Brick.

     On the inside, the sentiment is done digitally in Print Shop. The fonts are LD Thankful and LD Dabble both from Lettering Delights. They have great fonts and dingbats, as well as SVG's and graphics. If you sign-up for their e-mails, you get 9 fonts free. You can check them out here, through my affiliate link or by clicking the link in my sidebar. I then added stickers from American Traditional Designs Party Icons, that I get at Hobby Lobby. The Happy Birthday pattern paper is also from Hobby Lobby.

Back to the beach ;- )

     Sorry, I've been AWOL again. I've had some cluster headache issues and I have gotten my son back to college. I thought I had a great early start on today's card, when I started it last week.  Good thing, because I ended coming down to the wire. This card is for a good friend for whom I volunteered, when my son went to K- 8th grade. She was and is a Lutheran School librarian. I also volunteered for her predecessor, before I was pregnant. Ruth likes lighthouses, so I used the one from Cricut's Life's a Beach cartridge as my main image.  The white is Walmart cardstock and the blue is Core'dinations (like the texture.) The layers didn't cut as I would have expected and the white left spaces, so I re-cut the image a bit bigger and used those white cut outs popped up on the original frame. I used a gem for the light. The waves are a border feature cut of the wave image also from Life's a Beach. I used my Gypsy to set up the cut so that the white stripes would appear at the tops of the waves. The seagulls are the shifted cut from the lighthouse image. I edged them with a sharpie. The sentiment stamp is from the Scrappy Cat set  called Cardmaker's Dream. I hand wrote her name. I think the colors would also work well for a guy card with a less scripty (I know it's not really a word) font for the sentiment.

     The sentiment on the inside was done digitally and the font is Apple Casual. The elements were also cut from Life's a Beach. I edged the bottom layer of the pelican with a grey Copic marker to help him stand out where his head is above the blue. I also popped up his wing. The pier piling was inked with Ranger Tea Dye Ink. The bottom was sponged with Ranger Tumbled Glass and I used the negative of a scalloped oval cut I had to mask the top of the area, moving it around as I sponged, just to give a background for the images, mainly, because the pelican was white. I used a brown sharpie at the bottom of the images to ground them.

     All in all, I was very happy with the way this card turned out. What would I do differently? I might have popped up the seagulls. I debated a bit with myself about that one and then just glued them flat. I might have also given them eyes. I couldn't remember if you can see there eyes at that distance and didn't bother to go and look it up. I'm guessing you probably can. I should have used Swiss Dots on the brown bottom of the front. So, those are some things that could probably make the card better.

Two quick cards

     Well, I was down to the wire on two cards. It was a busy week and then I hadn't been feeling well, causing me not to get these two cards done earlier. So, here I was needing to get them done, before the mail carrier got here. Fortunately, I had a few tricks up my sleeve. I had picked up some note cards from Studio g in the Dollar Bin at Michaels', that had pre-cut windows. I'd also had on hand an assortment of embellishments that I've picked up over time, when there have been sales at Michaels' and JoAnn's. These are from JoAnn's Craft Essential 's line.  The front is embossed with Divine Swirls. The stamp, showing through the window of the anniversary card, is from Stampabilities. It was stamped with Big and Bossy and embossed with gold metallic embossing powder. Hint: Use a dryer sheet to wipe the area where you are going to emboss before you stamp to reduce the amount of powder that clings to unwanted areas. I wish I would remember this the ahead of time, every time ;- ) I colored it with both yellow gel and yellow glitter pens to make a champaign look and went over the glasses with Diamond Glaze.  Used my heat tool to speed drying.

  
     The inside sentiment is from Inkadinkadoo.

     The birthday card follows the same formula, only the stamps are from Hero Arts, made for Archiver. I embossed it with Swiss Dots.  Hint: I had to run it through twice and doing this would cause a section of the dots to de-boss, so I lined it up, to be the area where I would put my sentiment/embellishment. Always plan ahead - an interesting concept for me ;- ) OK, it was a happy accident the first time, but my pickiness, made me do this one a second time and I did it intentionally that time, so there!

It's really more red and maroon than pink.

     For quickie cards, I think they turned out pretty good. Kind of like the less expensive line of cards, but still with that homemade touch. We all have those times when we are out of time. The anniversary couple's daughter has a birthday this week and I need to make a unicorn card for her. So, they will get the full custom treatment then ;- ) As it turned out, it was good they were fast. I didn't just have to beat the mail carrier, but get to the post office before it closed, because I was out of stamps and traffic was horrendous because of a parade. Some days nothing is easy ;- )

An Adventure Birthday Card

     Today's card is for a friend's husband. Don't I ever get to make cards for women? He bought kayaks this summer, so I thought I'd use that as a focal point for his card. I went through the Life's a Beach cart and found a photo card with waves on it (page 45). I decided to use the Gypsy to weld a sun, from the page before, to the upper left corner of the frame and give it more of a scenic look. I then cut it out on my Expression. The sun was 2 inches, so I also cut out a 2 inch sun in yellow from Core'dinations paper and enhanced it with yellow gel pen (the circle outline) and Copic markers (the nose and lips) and added it with pop dots. I added small black pearls for eyes. I backed the frame with a lighter blue paper to make a sky. I edged the waves with Puffy Appliqué Markers that puff up when you heat them. The heat and humidity made them a bit runny, but they still worked ok. I attached the kayak, which was from Jolee. The sentiment is from Hero Arts' Big Hugs and was stamped with Tsukineko Rocket Red Gold.

     I cut the inside papers with a wavy blade, on my paper cutter and the sentiment was made digitally in Print Shop. The fonts are Aloe,  Carlisle and LDJ Jilligraphy ( the first two are free fonts and the last is from Lettering Delights - see link in my side bar.) The lifejacket came on the sticker sheet with the kayak and the balloon is from Jolee's All That Bling, available at my Walmart.

     What would I do differently? Well, the light blue background could be embossed, maybe with divine swirls? I'd have to try it, to see if I'd like it or not. Fairly simple, but I think it's a nice card all of the same. A friend of mine wondered, if guys really appreciated a hand-made card and all of the time that goes in to it. I think it might depend on the guy. Some, I'd put a lot more work into it, and they would.  I don't think he'd appreciate the time it would take me to do a lot of hand coloring though. 

This card came together pretty easily. I learned that if you have some tearing, while you are cutting with your Cricut, it might not be your blade. It might be time for a new mat. The places where my mat was less sticky, was where the waves were tearing, everything else cut fine. Using a new mat, caused it to cut perfectly, all with the same settings.

Male graduation card.

     Today's card is another graduation card, only this one is for a male. We have a graduation party to attend this weekend. One of the cards in the earlier posts is for his sister and the party this weekend is for both of them. She is graduating High School and he is graduating 8th grade. To see her card (if you missed it and are interested), click here. I know in some areas, 8th grade graduations aren't celebrated. Here, depending on where you go to school, you child may attend the same school from Kindergarten (or pre-school) right through 8th grade, with the same kids, making it a bigger event, then if they changed schools at the middle (or junior high school level).

     The papers are from Paper Studio's Graduation Paper Pack and the stickers are from Stampendous Class a'peal. I cut the name with Cricut's Plantin Schoolbook cart in the standard setting 2 times and popped it up. I embossed the sentiment with silver glitter embossing powder.

     On the inside, I just matted the sentiment, I wrote digitally with Print Shop using the LD Dabble font from Lettering Delights and I stamped the stars (Northwoods) and embossed them using silver glitter embossing powder.

     I think it turned out nice, though the star on the right should be over to the right a bit more, but I have a tendency to just eyeball things.

I still have a wedding card to do and a few birthdays coming up. I can't believe the CHA Supershow is the week after next, though it's not the same this year. I was looking forward to taking a few workshops, but there aren't any. I guess it will just be make-and-takes and shopping. What I've really wanted to see were the booths in the real  CHA. Maybe some day.

Stamping and paper piecing.

     Today's card is for a male friend from Church, who was one of my son's teachers in 6th through 8th grade. In fact, he is one of my son's favorite teachers. Last week, during my fuzzy thinking period, I had picked out a different card idea for him, which I didn't remember today, so today, I created a new card idea ;- ) I used the Hero Arts stamp set Birthday Wishes, which is exclusive to Achiever's and the QuickKuts Nesting Circle Variety Cookie Cutter dies that were designed to go with them. I embossed the main image first with silver embossing powder, then paper pieced the plate and frosting from scraps I had. I believe the frosting is pearl paper from Crafters' Companion. The confetti is colored with metallic markers and the candles with glitter markers. (Yes, glitter on a guy card.) It's a birthday, celebrate!  I felt the gel maker colors were too vivid and the glitter ones looked better.  The background stamp is also from the set.

     The sentiment was done digitally using LDMarooned and LDDabble, both from Lettering Delights. The candle embellishment was a gift from a friend and the stars are from K&Company's Happy Birthday stickers.

     What would I do differently? I'm not sure. I think it works as a nice, general birthday card. I usually use these silver, metallic embellishments from JoAnn's that are cakes, hats and balloons, but I'm currently out of them.

     For those of you who love fonts, my DH, sent me an article he found on Macworld about a cool font that looks like embroidery. Well, that was what it was about for me. The article went on about the software used to design the font and a font designing competition (at least I think that's what it went on about (YAWN). I'm back and have a card, Huzzah!

     Sorry, I've been MIA. I've gone up to my craft room each day and couldn't figure out the problem. I didn't know if it was that I'd lost my creativity, or I was chasing too many rabbits (I had a confirmation card, a birthday card, a wedding card and graduation cards that I could make) or what. Each day I'd finally pick out papers, for one of the projects, but just couldn't get started, so I'd straiten something up and call it a day. I eventually decided it must be lack a focus, from too many different directions, but today it dawned on me. There is a type of migraine that doesn't cause pain, but causes fuzzy thinking. I recently learned about it. All these years, I just thought it was me. Each night I end up with a migraine, but no pain during the day. When a friend and I went out to lunch yesterday and then stopped for some grocery items, I just couldn't think what I needed. It was my idea to stop and I just couldn't think. Today, the light bulb went off. That's been the problem all week.
     My plans were to get started after today's errands. So, after I got home today, the weather was gorgeous, relatively speaking and I just couldn't start in, indoors, ha ha. What did I find when I went to clean up a bit in my roses?

     That's the end of a disconnected gutter that the baby bunny is thinking about hiding in. I explained to him that bunnies, despite my garden, have a special place in our yard (my DS's special stuffed toy when he was little was a bunny) and he need to watch out for the neighborhood cats. then I backed away and went in to create this card for a young man's confirmation. I used Clear Dollar Stamps's Die Cuts called Cross Messages Set and the Cross Messages Clear Acrylic Stamps. I used gold embossing powder on the on the cross and sentiment, but it didn't show up well in the photo. Looking at the photo, I'm wondering who took these photos? ;- ) The embossing is actually very shiny and elegant looking in person, just as shiny as the gold brads.

     The sentiment on the inside was written by my husband and the font is Lucida Calligraphy, which is standard on Mac's, I'm not sure about PC's . I colored the sticker with copics, because it had been pink. The REJOICE was an item I've had for awhile.

     What would I do differently? I'd glue the sentiment centered, right to left on the inside ;- ) Remember no one is perfect, but God and I'm always proving that. I should have made the type smaller and made the white sentiment piece smaller. I'm happy with the front though.

     Just an update on the puppies, I need to pick one, of the two and they are soooo cute I can't decide. If I take them both, I'm hoping one of you will take us in ;- ) 'Cause I'm sure DH won't let us stay. Here they are.

Guy cards can by fun.

     Today's card is for a guy who is 24 and we've known him since he was born.  He is someone who has kept that kid sense of fun. He loves working with kids at his Church. When we use to hike together, he use to always point out all the different types of mushrooms. His mom always said, that would be all the wildlife we would see, hiking with her 3 rambunctious boys ;- ) Pretty much was, except the time we found a rattlesnake. So for his card, I used the mushroom from Smily Cards, that was offered free from Provo Craft to Gypsy owners, and turned it into a shaped card. This was only the second time I've made my own shaped card and the first time with the Gypsy. Despite a few problems, figuring out what is what, with the layering, since Smily Cards doesn't have a handbook, I muddled through. So here it is.

     Pretty cute mushroom. On the inside, I used Print Shop to do the sentiment digitally and it's ability to shape the font block, first in a half circle and then in a square. I designed a smaller mushroom, on the Gypsy, figured out for sure where it would cut and put my printed paper there on the mat. The fonts I used were LD Jumpy from Lettering Delights (you can click on the link on the right bar of my blog, last week for their sale) and Casque Open Face Wacky (which is a free font available at a number of places, I don't remember where I got it though, just google font + it's name).

     I'm not usually it to puns, but it seemed to fit. What would I do differently. Well, some things were stretching for me, some were fixing mistakes. 21st birthday for a guy.

     I know it's been guy, guy, guy. Doesn't it seem to go in streaks like that!? Well as you can see from the title, this one is a special birthday, a 21st! I used SCAL for this one. Unfortunately I had had the drive on that computer die not long ago and I hadn't reloaded my fonts. Well, I didn't feel like it yesterday, so I just made due with a font that comes standard on an IBM. This is radical for me, because I love fonts and IBM really doesn't have many (I'm a MAC person.) I used Trebuchet MS in bold, italic as the font to cut out the 21. I also duplicated it and set the style to pointy shadow, a very handy feature of SCAL. The paper for the main image is AC metallic (love this card stock : multi-cut it though.) The embossing is Cuttlebug's Christmas Stars.

     The inside, as usual was done digitally, and here I got to use more interesting fonts. The font is LD Dabble, from Lettering Delight (remember Dollar Days ;- ) for the main font  and NewWGL4font, for the word birthday. Now that is what the font called itself, but when I went to look it up on the internet, I kept finding a totally different font, so beats me where it came from. I believe I got it from Urban fonts, which has many great free fonts, so if you're in a browsing mood you might check them out. The embellishments are JoAnne's brand.

  
     I tried to show the glitter on the background paper, the metal embellishments and the effect of the clear gel pen that I added to the confetti on the word birthday. I thought of coloring it, but decided I liked the monochrome look better.

     What would I do differently. I don't think I'd do anything differently. I really like this card. It's pretty easy peasy. I have made one similar to it before, but lost the file in the hard drive problem. I did use a different font for the 21 and I probably would change that, to a font that had a bit more tip or kerning to it, to give more movement to the front. The embossing is new and I like how that worked on this card. The inside fonts are also new and I'm liking them as well. What's your take on this card? Bunny hopping for the guys.

     Well, I finished the card for the male college students on my list.  I basically just changed the colors on the front and used a different paper on the inside.

   Compare to the card for the gals from last post.

     If you hadn't read the earlier post, the pockets are for packets of Fun Dip. I've known these students since at least kindergarten. Most of them went to grammar school with my son.

     I thought I'd show you the background paper I made,  since you can't really see it with the images on the card. It's a great idea when you need paper and plain colored paper just won't do. Info in previous post (the boy's is gold perfect pearls however.)

     I've finished them all, up to the point of the water coloring. I have to mention that these Bugaboo bunnies are very mischievous. My husband cut out the bunnies (I was tired of cutting out black rectangles myself) and by the time he got upstairs to my craft room, 14 of the bunnies had disappeared. I know I had cut and scored all of the card bases ahead of time, so I could just assemble them all and when the time came, 5 bases were missing. I had the 2 1/2 inches of cardstock that was cut off of them, but they were nowhere to be found. <.< Very suspicious. I wonder were the bunnies put the cardstock and what they plan on doing with it?  Here is a photo of all of the finished cards together.

Rocking the guy card!

     Before I give in to the call of more flowers, I needed to do another masculine card. This one is for a 22 year old. I can't believe how fast they all grow up. From birth to 22 in a blink or two. Anyway, this friend's son, had played in their Church Praise Band. I decided to use the star shaped-card, from Cricut's Birthday Bash. It's from the card function on the image of the fox playing the guitar (4th image). I used the star and a modified version of the words (just a minor trim), from that page and the font from that cart as well. I decided that a cooler guitar was needed though, so I used the guitar from the Indie Art Solutions free upload to the Gypsy. I hid the inside cuts and then used the Cri-Kits metallic green gel pen to draw the details in.

     On the inside, I used a digital sentiment with the Lettering Delights font SNF Jester Fool.  Don't forget, they are still having their Dollar Days at Lettering Delights. There's a link in my right margin. The pattern papers are DCWV's  Generation Tech. I think I'll find a lot of uses for this paper pack. (I'll probably get a 2nd.) The metallic paper is from AC Cardstock.

     What would I do differently? Looking at it, I'm thinking of adding some bling to the pegs (tuning pegs) at the top of the guitar. I wish I'd come up with a different way to do the sentiment. I was kind of going for an inverted triangle, but it didn't fit. (Only in my mind.) Maybe if I'd used a smaller font size. Then maybe cut that with zig zag scissors? Maybe I'll find an embellishment to go to the left of the star, in the blue area. I really like how the front turned out though.  The bit of bling for more dimension would be about it (the star and the guitar and the letters that need it are already popped up.)
